To apply for admission, you need to complete the online application and submit a check payable to Ithaca College for $40. You will also need to arrange to have two letters of recommendation submitted by persons who can evaluate your academic ability. If you are applying for an assistantship, arrange to have two additional letters of recommendation sent by people who are able to evaluate your previous work performance. In addition, you should have your undergraduate institution send an official transcript to Division of Graduate Studies, Ithaca College, 111 Towers Concourse, Ithaca, NY 14850-7142.
Music
All applicants (except composition) should have an audition on the major instrument or voice or submit a taped performance. Contact the graduate chair in music regarding the content of the audition or tape recording to be submitted. Composers do not have a performance audition.
M.M. in performance: Applicants who submit tapes may also be required to audition in person to demonstrate their recital potential. Applicants in percussion performance must audition on campus.
M.M. in composition: Applicants should submit representative scores and tapes. A personal interview is recommended.
M.M. in conducting: To aid us in the assessment of conducting competence, applicants are required to submit an initial screening videotape of a rehearsal or performance they conducted recently. Based on the tape review, successful candidates will be invited to campus for a conducting audition and interview.
M.S. and M.M. in music education: Applicants must hold an initial or provisional teaching certificate, normally earned through an undergraduate music education degree. All candidates must submit a 500-700-word essay on a contemporary issue in music education, demonstrating their English-language skills and using scholarly sources where appropriate. The essay will be requested within the online application; you do not need to supply it separately. The deadline for all application materials is April 1 of the year the candidate wishes to begin study.
Summer-only applicants: Only the M.S. and M.M. degrees in music education are available in the summer. The deadline for all application materials is April 1 of the year the candidate wishes to begin study. All candidates will be notified of an acceptance decision by April 15; they must accept admission and pay the entrance deposit by May 1.
